Time clock - A time clock is a mechanical timepiece that was used to assist in tracking the hours an employee of a company worked. This was accomplished by inserting a heavy paper card, called a time card, into a slot on the time clock.

Real-time clock - A real-time clock (RTC) is a computer clock (most often in the form of an integrated circuit chip) that keeps track of the current time even when the computer is turned off. It is used in many kinds of computers, and is present in all modern personal computers.

This is done so as not to cover any of the features of the clock's face under the hands, and to leave a 'cheerful' impression (hence 'smiling' time).
